Developed by NEC, the PC-98 is a 16-bit personal computer released in Japan in 1982. When it came to its entertainment value, it was well-known for its huge catalog of doujin (fan-made) games. It also has its fair share of great rockin’ music that resonates up until today thanks to each composer’s way of handling its minimalist sound technology to craft something memorable for eons to come.
Here are our top five picks that you should have a listen to:
1. Flame Zapper Kotsujin – Into the Last Battle
This game resembles a faster version of Raiden. Developed by two guys who make up C02 Pro, Flame Zapper Kotsujin takes place entirely in outer space. The techno beats during the stages compliment the in-game shooting of enemies really well.
2. Rusty – Queen in the Dark Knight
Rusty by C-Lab is an obscure and under-appreciated hidden gem. It is more than just a Castlevania clone; it expands on the base game by introducing open-ended levels. You have to explore the stages to get the items required to proceed to the next stage. Stage 1’s theme is easily one of the best in the game; it brings you the feel of a heroine starting her journey of many perils.
3. Night Slave – Hard Rushing
A mixture of visual novel, Assault Suits Valken-styled gameplay and a Gradius-like weapon system, Night Slave is a really hard side-scrolling action game. With a touch of adult elements as well. The jazzy tunes in the soundtrack in the game gives some sort of a laid-back feel, like as if you’re in a metropolitan city.
4. YU-NO – Different World
A pure visual novel / adventure game hybrid, YU-NO is one of the longest visual novels of its time. Do check out the Windows port; it has been fan-translated by TLWiki and it is available on their website. The soundtrack is composed by the late Ryu Umemoto, widely considered as one of the best FM-synth chiptune composers in his time.
5. Genei Toshi (Illusion City) – Shop
Genei Toshi is a cyberpunk RPG set in Hong Kong. The game is similar to Phantasy Star IV, where you go around the city and fight unknown soldiers who are trying to kidnap a girl that tags along with your main character. The music in this game are a mix of techno and oriental styles, which blend together nicely.

Joined: 26 Jan 2005 Posts: 12703 Location: Wherever. | So let's talk about Aleste then. What is, by the way, the proper pronunciation of the title? NH: I don't know! I think we're going to choose the one that is pronounced the coolest and make it official. One more reason to like M2. There are basically two people. I'm working on planning and graphic design. The programmer [Masato Yamanaka] is working on game design, too. [...] But that young programmer is the world's best player of a certain shooting game, and that balances it out again. Did I miss this tidbit from earlier in the topic someplace? I don't know many superplayer aliases, anyone have any idea which one this might be? Also didn't know the Flame Zapper Kotsujin guy was doing the character design. Aleste is a very multi-faceted series and from title to title, there are different features. But there is one common denominator in the whole series, and that is its anime-like qualities. Makes it all the more amusing that the Super Aleste US release cut all that stuff out, though it's still one of my favorites. _________________ 'Fight me IRL if you want to man up so badly.' Portability to different platforms, maybe workflows and tooling if you're already accustomed to Unity (and community support if you're not). _________________ NTSC-J:You know STGs are in trouble when you have threads on how to introduce them to a wider audience and get more people playing followed by threads on how to get its hardcore fan base to play them, too. 1CCs | Twitch | YouTube Last edited by Shepardus on Wed Nov 27, 2019 11:07 pm, edited 2 times in total.

He's competitive in quite a few games, Garegga being the big one.

Getting some serious CAVE vibes here... https://www.gematsu.com/2020/09/aleste- ... ps4-switch We also have a compilation of several Aleste games. It's unfortunate it doesn't include Aleste 2, M.U.S.H.A., Super Aleste, or Robo Aleste, but at least it's better than nothing. _________________ https://ginga-force.fandom.com/wiki/Ginga_Force_Wiki

It looks like they made it just two SMS and two GG games, so they could put it on a GG mini. :/
